The Animated Crucifix

Why do you criticize and
judge Mel Gibson?

We did not ask or force Mel Gibson to take the very public roles of a movie director, producer, and actor. He has chosen center stage, so he is fair game to anyone in this great country. Have you written all the newspaper editors, talk show hosts, and movie reviewers to criticize their remarks about him? He is spreading his mere opinions far and wide with intense visual images and moving soundtracks. Why in the world should we sit back and not say anything about the content and effect we see? The man has a large influence on this country, and it can and should be addressed by every concerned citizen of our nation.

He has now entered the religious arena, of which he knows little, so we have a duty to expose his hypocrisy and errors. Have we done anything wrong? Did not Jesus expose the hypocrisy and errors of the Pharisees and Sadducees? Did not the apostles expose the hypocrisy and errors of Jews and Gentiles alike? Are not ministers called to expose errors and those who espouse them? Since when is it wrong to name names and call sin, sin? Our political candidates sure do it!

Mel Gibson is an ultraconservative Catholic. He is catering to evangelicals and Protestants like he is their loving brother, when he is a Mariolater and believes his own wife may to hell for not being a Catholic. He has prayer with evangelicals and solicits their purchase of movie tickets, all the while believing there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church. He is cuddling with Baptists, who should know that his church’s doctrine of transubstantiation is the most abominable heresy ever conceived on earth. Someone needs to sound the alarm!

We do not know Mel Gibson’s heart, and we have not said anything about his heart. We believe he is most likely very sincere in his opinions, but he is very ignorant about Bible Christianity. You do not learn much Christian doctrine listening to Mass in Latin, reading diaries of stigmatic mystics, doing the Stations of the Cross, and praying to Mary with the Rosary. Read it again: we are not judging his heart; we are judging his source material and resulting content. He may be very sincere; he is definitely the best director/actor in Hollywood today; but he is ignorant of Bible Christianity. Should we say it again? We are not judging his heart, for only God knows his affections and motives.

What we know best about Mel Gibson are the movies he has produced over the last 20-30 years. His movies are contrary to the wholesome words of the Lord Jesus Christ and the doctrine which is according to godliness. They promote the very things that Jesus condemned in His life and purged in His death. We are not aware of any repentance on his part for any one or all of these movies. Even his most recent efforts have been faithless, Catholic, or otherwise unacceptable to Bible Christians.

Consider one of his best movies, Braveheart. While the plot, script, filming, and acting were superb, we must point out the movie promoted fornication and adultery! Come on, who did not want William Wallace to make love with the married Princess of Wales? Who did not get pleasure of the same princess whispering to Longshanks that the baby growing in her belly was fathered by William Wallace, and not his son? Come on, be honest. Mel is a smut peddler!

We think Mel Gibson is the best in the world today at his trade. We think he is sincere in bringing “The Passion” to theaters. But we strongly believe the Catholicism of his personal convictions and that presented in the movie are highly dangerous to Bible Christians. And we strongly believe his past movies have promoted faithless and profane living to America’s moviegoers. Where are we wrong, given our convictions?
