While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
Jehovah, the only true God, always had wisdom. He always thought and acted with complete knowledge and total understanding. He never learned anything. No one ever instructed Him. He had no confusion, doubts, or questions. He always had perfect understanding. He possessed infinite wisdom before this world had any existence.
You are a creature of this earth: you claim existence and reality by terra firma. You are made from dust; you eke out a living from the dust; you return to dust. Some foolishly call the world Mother Earth. The most certain thing you know is earth's dirt. But the LORD had all wisdom before making dry ground, the fields, or Mt. Everest from dust.
Solomon was in the middle of personifying wisdom as a woman, who described and offered her benefits to men (Pr 8:1 - 9:12). The immediate context of this proverb is God's possession of Wisdom before His great works of creation (Pr 8:22-31). And the specific creative act of the proverb is forming the dry ground, both fields and mountains.
The earth was originally a ball of water (Pr 8:24; Gen 1:2). There was not one cell of animal life of any sort to evolve in the slightest degree. It was dark, because there was no sun, which He created on the fourth day. On the first day, He created light; He created sky and air on the second day, dry land on the third. And He called dry land Earth (Gen 1:3-13).
Before the third day, God already possessed infinite wisdom, as the proverb declares. And He used it to create the majestic earth! Isaiah elaborated on the evidence of His great wisdom and understanding from His creation of the dry ground and mountains. He wrote,
"Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing."
God made Mount Everest from the dust of the earth! It stands 29,035 feet, or 5••• miles, above sea level! That is 3 miles higher than where you need supplemental oxygen! Many airplane flights do not go that high! Around 4000 persons have tried to climb it; near 700 have made it; and 142 died trying. When the LORD plays with dust, big things happen!
What will you do with this great God and His wisdom? What is wisdom? It is the power of right judgment - the knowledge and understanding to grasp any situation and know what to do. Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Pr 1:7; 9:10), and the details are provided in the written word of God (Ps 19:7; 119:98-100). If you neglect His offer, you must love death, because He will mock when your calamities come (Pr 8:36; 1:24-32).
